The student is instructed to assemble the appropriate licks to match a chord progression: two measures of G, one measure of C, two measures of D, etc. Included are thirty arrangements of standard bluegrass chord progressions demonstrating this process.

The back-up techniques and licks are based on full chord positions (no open strings) and thus are moveable up and down the fingerboard. Besides standard accompaniment patterns, fancy licks are presented incorporating passing chords, single-string style, blues phrasings, Merle Travis/Eddie Adcock style, and chord extensions utilizing the fifth string. Three-four time licks and techniques are also included. Arrangements of eleven standard bluegrass chord progressions demonstrate possible combinations of licks and techniques.
